Dirk van der Niepoort: A Wine Visionary Upholding Traditions
Journal Portugiesisches Weingut, Portugiesischer Weinmacher, Portugal
Dirk van der Niepoort is truly an exceptional presence in the Portuguese wine scene. Despite not having formal winemaking training or studying oenology, he has emerged as one of the most innovative and successful winemakers, particularly in the Douro Valley. His background from a long-standing winemaking family allows him to perceive wines through the discerning eyes and palate of an experienced taster. He also holds a business degree from St. Gallen in Switzerland, which has influenced his approach to winemaking.
Self-made Winemaker and Out-of-the-box Thinker
Since 1842, the Dutch-rooted van der Niepoort family has been established in Portugal, with the first four generations not owning their vineyards but only producing Port wine from purchased grapes. It was not until Dirk van der Niepoort took the reins in the fifth generation that he began experimenting with red wines in the 1980s. Initially laughed at and criticized, this self-made winemaker and out-of-the-box thinker initiated a qualitative revolution in winemaking in the Portuguese Douro Valley.
Impressive Red and White Wines from the Douro
Since Dirk vinified his first red wine in 1987, his wines have become increasingly outstanding, elegant, lighter, and cooler. It didn't take long for other winemakers in the Douro to follow in his footsteps and start producing their own white and red wines. Today, thanks to Dirk van der Niepoort's initiative, the region is no longer just known as a producer of grapes for Port wine; it has gained recognition as an appellation for remarkable red and mineral white wines.
Dirk van der Niepoort's Wineries
However, Dirk van der Niepoort is active as a winemaker not just in the Douro region. His wine cosmos, centered in Vila Nova de Gaia in the Douro, now includes the Quinta de Nápoles, acquired in 1987 for his initial red wine experimentation, as well as the nearby Quinta do Carril, the Quinta de Baixo in the Bairrada region, the Quinta da Lomba in the Dao, and a winery in the Minho region in the Basto subregion.
Old Varieties and Challenging Terroirs
He had compelling reasons for acquiring each estate. He is particularly drawn to very old grape varieties and challenging terroirs, such as those found on his Quinta de Nápoles along the left bank of the Têdo River. The approximately 30 hectares of vineyards are situated at altitudes of 180 to 250 meters, with some vines over 80 years old. From these, he creates distinctive red, white, and rosé wines. With the 1988 acquisition of Quinta de Carril, he laid the groundwork for his Batuta wine.
Reinterpreting Traditional Grape Varieties
The Quinta de Baixo in the Bairrada region joined the Niepoort wine empire in 2012 because Dirk van der Niepoort saw the potential for elegant and fine wines full of character and personality in this challenging wine region. In the cool and moist climate, local varieties such as Maria Gomes, Arinto, Bical, and Cercial grow on clay, limestone, or sandy soils with high acidity and low alcohol content; the dominant yet stubborn red Baga was love at first sight for him. Dirk van der Niepoort’s goal is to reinterpret traditional grape varieties in new ways.
Niche Wines of Great Quality from Vinho Verde
Driven by his desire to preserve old vines, Dirk van der Niepoort ventured into the once-celebrated wine region of Dao. He acquired the winery Quinta da Lomba near Gouveia, thereby rescuing 5 hectares of over 60-year-old vines at the foothills of the Serra da Estrela mountain range. Eventually, he was drawn to the region of Vinho Verde as well, where he saw immense potential for niche wines of high quality. His estate in the Basto subregion comprises 3 hectares of vineyards primarily planted with the relatively rare local varieties of Avesso, Azal, and Arinto. Here, he primarily produces white wines, but he also aims to preserve the traditional Vinho Verde Tinto.
The Fascination of Working with Different Terroirs
The acquisition of various estates in diverse wine regions of Portugal serves one main purpose for Dirk van der Niepoort: the fascination of working with such different terroirs. It is important to him to explore and understand each individual terroir in detail to ultimately create wines with true personality that reflect their respective terroir. About twenty people are employed at the Niepoort winery to assist him, including some who have been with the Niepoort family business for generations, like Master Blender José Nogueira. Since the company's founding in 1842, members of the Nogueira family have served as Master Blenders and loyal employees of the Niepoort family, with the fifth generation of both families now working side by side.
Combining Tradition and Modernity
This interplay of tradition and modernity is what makes Dirk van der Niepoort's success as a winemaker unique, a blend that few Portuguese winemakers can perfect. It becomes evident that Dirk's lack of formal winemaking education has actually been an advantage in his career. He approaches his wines with experience as an international wine taster, seeking to uncover the particular characteristics of a terroir with the goal of reflecting the individuality of a region in his wines.
Globally Successful with “Fabelhaft”
Ultimately, the essence is this: regardless of which of his estates a wine originates from, it must be light, refreshing, and uplifting. For instance, Dirk van der Niepoort consistently creates impressive Douro wines that stand out for their finesse and elegance, earning an excellent reputation well beyond the borders of Portugal. Globally successful, one example is a red wine from the Douro, known by different names in each market; in Germany, it’s called “Fabelhaft” with a label featuring a design by Wilhelm Busch—a truly marvelous concept!
Experimental Spirit and Passion for Quality Wines
Despite all his success, his experimental spirit and passion for quality wines remain boundless. He is a founding member of the Portuguese winemaker group “Douro Boys”, which unites five of the best red winemakers in the Douro Valley. Besides Dirk van der Niepoort, the group includes notable winemakers like Joao Ferreira, Alvares Ribeiro, Francisco Olazabal, and Christiano Van Zeller, committed to promoting the Douro Valley and its distinctive wines worldwide.
Dirk van der Niepoort “Project Wines”
Under the banner of “Project Wines”, Dirk van der Niepoort produces wines in collaboration with other producers, such as “Doda” with Álvaro de Castro from the Dão region, “OmLet” with Spanish winemaker Telmo Rodriguez, “Ultreia” with Spanish producer Raul Perez, the wines “Muhr van der Niepoort”, which he produces in Austria with the winemaker Dorli Muhr, and “Cape Charming” and “Cape Fortified”, which he creates with winemakers in South Africa. The wine label proudly states “Niepoort Projects” alongside the name of each wine.
Numerous Awards for the Portuguese Winemaker
It is clear that such a deserving winemaker has a wealth of accolades to reflect upon. According to “Wine Spectator”, van der Niepoort is known as “small, yet fine and of a quality that few producers achieve.” His many awards include “Winery of the Year 2013” by the American Wine & Spirits Magazine, the selection of Fabelhaft Reserva as “Red Wine of the Year International 2013”, and three-time recognition as “Red Wine of the Year”. The jury of the magazine “Der Feinschmecker” chose him as the Portuguese Winemaker of the Year, underlining once again that Dirk van der Niepoort is an exceptional presence in the Portuguese winemaking scene.
