Exploring the Cape in Four Days: A Memorable Journey

Due to time constraints, a 30-day world tour isn't possible for us. Here’s a brief story about how we attempted to show our friend Martina and her daughter Maria Lara the Cape in four days while implementing a project proposal that Maria Lara had envisioned. For her 18th birthday, she decided to invest her savings in a project rather than spend them. This project was to be finalized within the four days.

Much of what we did, apart from the first day, may already be known to many. For everyone else, the following lines can serve as inspiration.

Day 1 Thursday

Arrival at the airport at seven in the morning, breakfast, then off to Eagle's Nest, a long-standing project of Martina’s. Surprisingly, five days prior, we met a man named Pedro at the market selling xylophones, djembes, and other instruments. We asked if he could introduce these to a kindergarten – he agreed and scheduled a meeting for Thursday to showcase his work to Maria and Selwyn.

Pedro came and gave a brief showcase. Interestingly, he was also "Pedro the Music Man" from the children's series of the 1990s. Selwyn, who had watched the show as a child, was thrilled. Maria Lara decided to allocate her project budget for this initiative.

After this eventful day, we headed to Stellenbosch, showed them around a bit, and finished the day with sushi and Sauvignon Blanc at Genki.

Day 2 Friday

Departure was set for 9:00, but we only left at 10:30. Traveling past Kayelitsha along the coastal road to Muizenberg, we experienced traditional fishing methods. Next, we went over Boyes Drive to Kalk Bay, where we had breakfast at Bootlegger. Afterward, we visited the harbor, saw penguins, explored the Cape, Scarborough, Kommetjie, Chapmans Peak, Hout Bay, and Camps Bay. Signal Hill offered a view of the city, and in the evening we reached the Waterfront.

We concluded the day with a meal at Harbor House. Much seen in one day, but with only four days, one must process faster.

Day 3 Saturday

Decision day: Our guests chose the Oranjezicht Market in Cape Town over whales in Hermanus. There, we admired the offerings, enjoyed coffee, croissants, and galettes, and met Pedro again.

Next, a city tour and high tea at Mont Nelson. The day ended with dinner at Decameron in Stellenbosch.

Day 4 Sunday

Though our guests don’t drink wine, wine region visits were on the agenda: Vergelegen – an impressive winery with a park and history. In the afternoon, we visited the Open Garden at Rustenberg and the Barlow family's garden. There, we met Donovan Rall, a member of the Cape Winemakers Guild, for a future meeting.

To wrap up, we enjoyed a cozy dinner at Café Zest in Gordon’s Bay before heading to the airport at 5:30 AM the next morning.

It was an intense four days filled with experiences. Four days condensed into this lengthy text – thank you for sticking with it.
