João Portugal Ramos - Premium Wines from Portugal's Star Winemaker
Journal Weingut Portugal, Portugiesischer Weinmacher, Portugal
João Portugal Ramos' winery is located in Estremoz, surrounded by 40 hectares of vineyards. However, this is not the complete story of this famed Portuguese winemaker. In 5 of the 14 wine regions in Portugal, João Portugal Ramos has vineyards: in the Douro Valley, Beiras, the Vinho Verde region, Tejo, and the Alentejo, where it all began.
His entry into the world of wine began in the small town of Estremoz in Alentejo. Here lies the heart of his wine empire – Adega Vila Santa, where he launched his winemaking career. After advising various winemakers, he planted his first vineyards in 1989. He built the Vila Santa winery in 1997 and expanded it in 2000 and 2017. Today, it serves as the headquarters where he welcomes visitors from across the globe.
Initially, João Portugal Ramos did not intend to produce wine. After studying agricultural economics, he worked as an oenologist in the 1980s, aiming to refresh the Portuguese wine industry as a consultant. By the 1990s, he transitioned to creating his wines, committing to sustainability practices from the outset, emphasizing handpicking and reduced yields for quality.
João Portugal Ramos Vinhos has always prioritized quality over quantity. His aim has been to offer wines that best represent the respective Portuguese regions, becoming symbols of excellence for Alentejo, Tejo, Beiras, Douro, and Vinho Verde. It is the synergy of state-of-the-art winery technology, the dedication of all staff, and the potential of well-tended vines that achieves his goal.
In the Douro, João Portugal Ramos launched the Duorum Project in 2007 with esteemed winemaker José Maria Soares Franco. Here, they combine their expertise to create wines with unique character and international appeal, starting from the historic Quinta de Castelo Melhor, among the oldest wine regions globally.
At Quinta de Foz de Arouce in Beiras, where winemaking has a longstanding tradition, he introduced innovative practices that led to the estate being celebrated as Winery of the Year by "Wine & Spirits" in 2014.
In Vinho Verde, the largest wine region in Portugal, he produces elegant Alvarinho wines from vineyards located at Monção e Melgaço, near the Spanish border.
Each year, he meticulously selects grape varieties under strict standards, taking advantage of an array of local and international grapes. Many of his wines age in barrels made from Portuguese and French oak.
João Portugal Ramos has played a significant role in establishing international standards in Portuguese viticulture, earning numerous accolades. He was named Winemaker of the Year in Portugal, and "Wine Spectator" lists his wines among the best in the world.
