An Emotional Moment
It's rare to witness a host with tears in their eyes during a wine presentation. This became a reality at the launch of Alexander Vineyards in early November.
For Stephen Alexander Newton, a long-held dream came true. Guests experienced an extraordinary range of wines at one of Cape Peninsula’s distinguished venues.
Stephen's Roots and Journey Abroad
Growing up in Fish Hoek, Stephen attended Wynberg Boys’ High School and studied at the University of Cape Town. After graduating as a Chartered Accountant, his journey took him to the United Kingdom, where a short stay turned into a permanent home. Stephen built both a family and a successful career.
In 2020, he made headlines when his advisory firm Elixirr was listed on the London Stock Exchange, marking a milestone as the first company to do so post-COVID pandemic.
The Return to Family Roots
Stephen’s grandfather, Alexander Moir, once owned a farm in Noordhoek, which was lost to the family. This loss profoundly impacted Stephen. In 2019, he seized the chance to reclaim Cape Point Vineyards, the former family farm, thus closing an emotional loop.
The Birth of The Alexander Estate
With respect for his family heritage, the estate was carefully developed. In 2025, it transformed into The Alexander Estate, named in honor of Alexander Moir. At its heart lies a luxurious Guest Villa, complemented by the newly established brand Alexander Vineyards.
Wine and Culinary Expertise
The wines are crafted by Hannes Meyer, an experienced Cellarmaster and CEO. His career includes tenures at Simonsig and Lomond, noted for clarity, elegance, and precise style. The launch was gastronomically enhanced by Nic Moses, who impressed with refined canapés and an exceptional menu.
Location and View
The villa sits below the event area of Cape Point Vineyards and shares the same access. From this vantage point, the view stretches over the infinity pool to Kommetjie and Long Beach – a panorama capturing the unique essence of the location.
Design and Identity of the Wines
The labels were designed by Emma Swanepoel, incorporating elements from Fynbos and Protea as a thematic thread that reflects a deep connection to South African nature.
A Legacy for Future Generations
Both Stephen and his son James Alexander Newton carry the name Alexander, honoring Alexander Moir. Historical photographs from the 1960s add emotional depth to the estate.
Rooted in South African Future
Even though James Alexander Newton was raised in the UK, he feels a strong connection to South Africa. He returned to actively run the winery and shape the future of The Alexander Estate. The wines are already in the pipeline and will soon be available in our shop.
