Oaked versus Unoaked Chardonnay: Understanding South Africa's Styles
Magazin | Journal Weißwein Südafrika, Südafrika
Determining which Chardonnay style is most popular in South Africa can be tricky, as it depends on various factors, including regional preferences, wine industry trends, and personal taste. Generally, however, unoaked Chardonnay tends to be more favored than oaked Chardonnay.
Unoaked Chardonnay is a wine crafted without aging in oak barrels. This allows the true aromas and characteristics of the grape to shine, resulting in a fresh, crisp, and often fruit-forward wine that is easy to enjoy and pairs well with a variety of dishes.
On the other hand, oaked Chardonnay undergoes aging in oak barrels, which can impart flavors of vanilla, caramel, and toast to the wine. This style is typically fuller-bodied, richer, and more complex than unoaked Chardonnay, but it can also be polarizing due to the pronounced oak characteristics.
In recent years, there has been a trend towards more unoaked Chardonnays that emphasize the fruit flavors and freshness of the grape without oak influence. This style is now referred to as "unwooded" or "naked" Chardonnay. Nevertheless, there are still many producers in South Africa crafting oaked Chardonnays that showcase the versatility of the grape and its ability to adopt diverse flavor profiles depending on oak usage.
