Vineyard Delheim
Delheim Wines produces a wide range of internationally acclaimed and award-winning wines. Popular wines from the Family Range include the varietal wines Delheim Shiraz, Delheim Merlot and Delheim Pinotage on the red side and Delheim Chardonnay as the popular white. Other interesting wines in the Lifestyle range are the tangy, fresh Pinotage Rosé and the popular cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.
The history of the farm (which originally bore the name Driesprongh) goes back to 1699. However, it was Hans and Deli Hoheisen who in 1949 reintroduced the cultivation of vines on the historic Driesprongh farm on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg in Stellenbosch - Delheim was born (Delis home). It was the sparrow, however, who came to South Africa from Germany in 1951 and transformed Delheim into today's award-winning and dignified winery and destination for many visitors. Vera Cruz Farm, just three kilometres from Delheim, was later added to the estate.
Today, Sparrow Sparrow and his wife Vera still live on the estate in retirement and enjoy the company of Delheim visitors and reunions with old friends every day. Victor and Nora Sperling manage the entire farm and winery and also live on the estate with their families.
The Patriarch Sparrow Sparrow is also delighted with the resumption of his sweet dessert wine "Spatzendreck", which, unlike the original single-varietal Chenin Blanc, is now created from the three varieties Muscat de Frontignan, Riesling and Chenin. The original famous label, which depicts a sparrow doing its business, is also back in action and represents wonderfully the fusion of tradition and change that Delheim embodies so wonderfully today.
It is also interesting to note that Delheim is now home to 13 different families (not including the owners' families) - a holistic approach to the community and the land, to wine production, and to ethical and appreciative business management.
The name Hoheisen also stands for one of the largest land donations in the history of WWF South Africa. In 1990 Hans Hoheisen donated 13 833 hectares of land on the western border of the Kruger National Park to the WWF.
