Vineyard Quinta da Taboadella
The historic Taboadella Winery in Portugal's famous Dão region, owned by the well-known Amorim family and under the oenological expertise of winemakers Jorge Alves and Rodrigo Costa, produces an attractive and highly prized portfolio of traditional wines made from local grape varieties, with an unmistakable character of origin and remarkable class. In single-varietal wines and the Villae and Grande Villae ranges, complexity and freshness form the unique personality of Taboadella wines, in which the potential of the classic regional grape varieties is expressed in a remarkable way.
The Amorim family has been an important and indispensable name in Portugal's wine industry since 1870. What began with the sale of cork to the Caves de Vinho do Porto in Vila Nova de Gaia, has now become one of the most famous families in Portugal, with companies in many countries and different areas of activity. Since 1999, the fourth generation of the family has also been passionately dedicated to wine through the capable hands of Luisa Amorim. As Managing Director of the Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, located in the Douro region, and the Taboadella winery in the Dão, she manages the production of renowned wines of unmistakable character and exceptional quality.
The Taboadella estate has a rich and colourful history that goes back to the time of the Romans, who were already cultivating wine in the Dão. With a total of 40 hectares of vineyards on a 400 m to 530 m plateau between Vale do Pereiro and Vale do Sequeiro, it has gentle south-east-facing slopes with sunny exposures to the south and west. Mountain ranges and natural forests protect the vineyards here from the harsh Atlantic weather and the bitter winds from Spain, creating a microclimate in which maritime and continental influences combine perfectly.
The loose quartz-granite soil is home to native and traditional varieties such as Encruzado, Touriga Nacional, Jaen, Alfrocheira, Tinta Roriz and Sercial, among others. The average age of the vines is well over 30 years, and some vines can even boast a remarkable age of 100 years.
