The history of Reynolds Wine Growers dates back to 1820, when the English merchant and sailor Thomas Reynolds moved to Portugal, attracted by the enormous potential of the wine trade at that time. He settled with his two sons in the northern town of Porto, from where they supplied their trade in London with products from the Iberian Peninsula. In 1838, father and sons also became self-employed in the lucrative cork industry and opened their own cork factory in Alburquerque, Spain, where they spent the next 11 years until their return to Portugal in 1850. The family moved to Estremoz in the Alentejo region with the aim of growing and producing their own wine of excellent quality. Thus they acquired land which is still cultivated by the Reynolds family today. The Reynolds vineyards are located in the middle of the S. Mamede hills, a place of immense beauty - more than 200 hectares of green, gold and brown alluvial plains. The scenery is filled with skies and hills, oaks and cork trees that run through the landscape like a dotted pattern. The 41 hectares of vineyards are located on the hilltops, which guarantees adequate drainage of the soil and an abundance of sunlight. The soil consists mainly of slate. The undulating terrain creates large differences in temperature between day and night, which greatly facilitates the ripening process of the grapes. The winery was built in an old barn that was once used as a cattle shed. Reconstruction and restoration have been carried out with great respect for the original structure and construction: wide stone walls, chestnut ceilings and slate floors. The perfect environment for the production of top quality wines, with an average temperature of 20º C and a constant optimum level of humidity. Today, Reynolds wines are available on all continents and are served in the most prestigious restaurants worldwide. Due to the high quality of the grapes, Reynolds wines are practically completely free of sulphite. The winery's wines are produced with a high fruit concentration and under the strictest hygienic standards, which ensures an excellent storage potential of several decades. The portfolio of winemaker Nelson Martins is regularly awarded the highest prizes and recognitions by the prestigious wine magazines "Wine Enthusiast" and "Robert Parker". The famous cooperage "Tonnellerie Seguin Moreau" produces all barrels and vats for the wines of Reynolds Wine Growers - top quality all along the line!
