Product information "Thelema Sutherland Anna Chardonnay 2021"

The Thelema Sutherland Anna Chardonnay presents a remarkable terroir drive due to its chalky minerality and subtle notes of fresh-baked brioche. A seductive grapefruit essence on the palate beautifully rounds out the wood tones of this Chardonnay, providing long-lasting and refined acidity. However, although 30% of it went through malolactic fermentation and 80% new wood was used, this is not a lush and rich wine. Linear, toasty and complex, this great drop pampers with hints of cream, spice and vibrant fresh nuances of lemon and lime, providing balanced enjoyment.

After establishing Thelema Mountain Vineyards as a cult winery in Stellenbosch, owner and winemaker Gyles Webb established Sutherland Vineyards as an exciting new venture in the cool-climate Elgin region. Handcrafted from the finest vineyard parcels, the Sutherland Reserve Collection is a tribute to Gyles' four beloved granddaughters. Elegant, pure and full of nuance, this wine is named after Anna Vivienne Hilton (the patient one), the first granddaughter of Gyles.

Treatment in the cellar Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation took place in French oak barrels with a capacity of 228 litres per barrel, followed by 10 months of ageing on the coarse lees. During the ten-month ageing period, the lees were regularly stirred (batonnage) to achieve optimum complexity in the wine. Only the five best barrels were then blended and bottled after thorough quality testing.
