The Ataraxia Serenity is a wine crafted with meticulous attention to detail. Winemaker Kevin Grant has brought to life a concept that's been years in the making. This intriguing blend is a tribute to South Africa's distinctive varietal character, showcasing an essence that embodies tranquility.
Since 2006, Grant has been captivated by the idea of a 'cool climate' Pinotage blended with its heritage grapes. The culmination of years of careful experimentation results in this captivating expression. Each varietal was harvested at peak ripeness and fermented separately, with a focus on honoring their unique characteristics. After maturation in small 225L French oak barrels, the final blend came together organically. This vintage presents a wine with a compelling structure and alluring complexity, transcending typical Pinot Noir profiles. The 2021 Serenity is a delicate balance of flavors, with enticing notes of aromatic tobacco, red berry fruit, and seamlessly integrated oak.
Treatment in the cellar
Hand-harvested grapes underwent meticulous sorting and were lightly crushed in open fermentation tanks. Following a 7-10 day cold maceration, the wine was pressed and transferred separately into barrels for malolactic fermentation. The wine matured for 11 months in carefully selected French barriques, with 32% being new or first-fill wood. Afterward, the blends were assembled and bottled for your enjoyment.
