Karl Heinz Stock is a man of vision. When the banker moved to Portugal in 1996, it was for the sake of art—one of his passions. He then fell in love with Portuguese wine and decided that art and wine made a perfect blend, leading him to purchase Quinta dos Vales in Algarve. His goal: to produce the finest wine from Portugal in the south of the country. Karl Heinz Stock achieved this goal. His boutique winery is now well established, producing world-class wines across 44 hectares since 2007, attracting numerous enthusiastic wine lovers from near and far.

Realizing Dreams through 'The Winemaker Experience'

After achieving his primary goal, 2017 was the time for a new challenge. The Algarve, among Europe’s top vacation destinations, seemed an ideal place to realize dreams. The dream of crafting one’s own wine, in particular. “What true wine lover doesn’t dream of creating their own wine?” he thought, and set about launching a project he named 'The Winemaker Experience.'

Turning Wine Lovers into Genuine Winemakers

His goal with 'The Winemaker Experience' is to transform wine enthusiasts into real winemakers in the vineyards of Quinta dos Vales. The concept: selling small vineyard plots within the estate allowing amateur winemakers total freedom in choosing which grapes to plant to craft their unique wine. The plot sizes are designed so that new winemakers can expect an average yield sufficient to produce a barrel of wine.

Learning Under Professionals' Wing

Karl Heinz Stock’s idea was well received and evolved over the past five years into a true phenomenon. Initially, in 2017, only a few enthusiastic wine lovers sought training in their small vineyards; however, the project unexpectedly became immensely popular last year. It became known among wine lovers that at Quinta dos Vales, amateur winemakers could learn from professionals how to produce their own wine.

Worry-free Wine Crafting

In 2020, only seven individuals received guidance throughout the production process from Quinta dos Vales, but by 2021, this number jumped to 18 aspiring winemakers. Karl Heinz Stock aims not only to encourage new winemakers to create wines according to their preferences, but he also ensures they can do so worry-free, maintaining control over aspects like volume, grape varieties, and harvest timing.

18 Wine Productions from Private Individuals

In 2021, the winemaking team at Quinta dos Vales managed 18 private productions alongside their own. This was a significant challenge for the boutique winery’s staff, as these new winemakers represented nearly ten percent of Quinta dos Vales’ total production.

Innovative Niche in the Wine Industry

“We are proud to have established this innovative niche in the wine industry, offering a unique and authentic lifestyle experience,” says Karl Heinz Stock. Currently, there are 20 small vineyards on the Quinta dos Vales property owned by private individuals. Only 12 additional private vineyard plots remain available for sale.
