South African Farmstalls and Weekly Wine Offers

A quirky mix of wines we have on offer this week. What unites them?

They are all wines we truly enjoy. Each for different days and occasions, but we wholeheartedly recommend each of them.

Currently, we are particularly fond of the Great Heart Chenin, but we will surely return to this in the coming weeks. In the meantime, treat yourself by adding a few to your cart.

Now, let’s talk about Farmstalls. Farmstalls are a truly South African institution. Typically located along rural and main roads outside of towns, they offer a selection of regional products, such as fruits, vegetables, chutneys, pies, cakes, jams, pickles, wines, baked goods, and of course, sweets for the little ones. The presentation is simple, but the offerings are authentic and local—truly a refreshing alternative to the dull supermarkets that look the same the world over.

Many Farmstalls also have a café or deli, fulfilling a role similar to highway rest stops in Germany.

As enjoyable as these places are for us visitors on holiday, it becomes a challenge back home, especially when, like us, you want to avoid typical chain restaurants along your highways.

Among the Farmstalls, the Mooiberge Farmstall located on the R44 between Somerset West and Stellenbosch and the Perigrine Farmstall along the N2 in Grabouw are particularly dear to us.

Mooiberge has captured our hearts for over 20 years, known for its whimsical colorful scarecrows featured in many travel guides, and I always bring some dried fruit back to Munich from there.

Perigrine in Grabouw has become our go-to breakfast spot, especially before visiting the kids at “Eagles Nest”, where we indulge in an “Immune Booster”, a cappuccino, a “Cinnamon Bun”, and often “Eggs Benedict.” The eggs are presented as “soft, medium, or hard”—something we still struggle to achieve at home. Everything is served in excellent quality, as confirmed by all our visitors over the years.

Even Tanja Werheit, our German Consul General in Cape Town, can attest to this, as she took the time to meet us there last week before we embarked on our heartfelt project.

Also on this route is the Houw Hoek Farmstall, known for its legendary pies, which was awarded the best Farmstall at the Cape this year.

Affies Plaas is a must-visit for travelers in the Robertson wine region, providing a solid foundation for wine tasting experiences.

The Kloof, located on the fantastic Route 62, is a perfect stop while traversing the Klein Karoo towards Outshoorn. Enjoy local products and a warm, friendly atmosphere.

So, the next time you embark on a road trip or are on your way to Hermanus, Robertson, or the Kleine Karoo, consider taking a short gourmet break.

We also regularly recommend such breaks at the end of a long day—of course, never without a good glass of wine in hand…

In this spirit, we look forward to your visit again today,

(Offers valid from 16.11 to 23.11.)
