Van Loveren Family Vineyards boasts a rich and remarkable history. It begins with Hennie Retief, a charismatic young South African who purchased a farm in the picturesque Robertson Valley, and Jean van Zyl, a teacher from Ashton deeply connected to her Dutch heritage.

Together, they laid the foundation for what Van Loveren represents today: family values, respect for history, love for wine, and responsibility towards the environment and community.

The Namesake: Christina van Loveren

When Jean got married in 1939, she brought a special heirloom to the farm – a bridal chest that had been passed down through generations in her family. It belonged to Christina van Loveren, a remarkable woman who left her homeland of Holland to establish a new life at the Cape with her husband Willem van Zyl.

This magnificent mahogany chest, along with other mementos from Christina, inspired Jean to rename the farm Van Loveren in honor of this brave ancestor.

As Van Loveren grew, so did Christina's legacy. Wines, brandies, and even restaurants have been named after her, serving as a daily reminder that Van Loveren is rooted in tradition and heritage while remaining open to new paths, just as Christina once did.
