In 2014, ViniPortugal was established as an inter-professional organization to promote Portuguese wine. The inaugural “Portugal Wine Trophy” marked its first event and has since grown to be the most significant rapid-growing quality competition for Portuguese winemakers. In its first year, over 1,000 different wine samples were evaluated by a panel comprised of more than 50 regional experts in Porto.
At the 8th edition of the “Portugal Wine Trophy” held in late April this year, wine enthusiasts from around the globe gathered in the Portuguese city of Anadia in the Bairrada wine region. Winemakers submitted more than 1,400 wines for this edition of the “Wines of Portugal Challenge.” Over four days, independent experts, including oenologists and sommeliers, conducted blind tastings according to guidelines set by the UIOE and the OIV, scoring using the 100-point system.
At the end, judges awarded medals across various categories: red, white, rosé, sparkling, and fortified wines. A total of 419 medals were distributed, including 35 Grand Gold, 103 Gold, and 281 Silver. The most-awarded region was Douro, securing 12 medals, followed closely by the regions of Dão and Alentejo.
The awards ceremony took place in late May at the “Convento de Jesus” in Setúbal, where the Quinta Vale D. Maria Vinha da Francisca Red 2018 was crowned Wine of the Year and Best Red Blend. The best fortified wine was Porto Kopke Harvest 1966 from Douro, while the title for Best Red Variety Wine went to the Grande Rocim Alicante Bouschet 2017 from Alentejo.
In line with celebrating the history and diversity of Portuguese wine, ViniPortugal has also established tasting locations known as “Sala Ogival” in Porto and Lisbon. Wine lovers and those keen to become aficionados can sample exquisite wines from producers representing their respective regions.
Each month, the selection of wines celebrated from three distinctive regions changes, allowing visitors to explore the vast offerings of Portugal. At the “Sala Ogival”, guests receive tasting notes and further insights into the featured wines. After a brief tour, visitors can sit and enjoy two complimentary tastings from each region. Planning a visit to a “Sala Ogival” is a must for an upcoming trip to Portugal, as it offers an intimate glimpse into the extraordinary world of Portuguese wine.
