The Buitenverwachting Maximus, aptly named (Latin for 'the greatest'), is a premier wine that embodies excellence. In the glass, it showcases a bright and delicate lemon-yellow hue. The nose is enchanted by an exquisite bouquet of ripe melon, nectarine, and fresh gooseberry, inviting the senses for a delightful experience. On the palate, the initially sensed aromas emerge as splendid flavor nuances, promising an indulgent experience. This beautifully dry and full-bodied barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc features a long, lingering finish, making it a splendid ambassador of this noble grape variety.
Wine description according to Weinwisser 03/2017:
“18 months in barrel, 10% in new oak. Still showing notable influence from oak aging with buttery and lightly caramelized roast notes, which become distinctly more refined with air. On the palate, it is dense and creamy, presenting considerable power while maintaining clarity and precision with pineapple notes. A hefty wine whose Sauvignon typicity reveals itself on the second approach as it opens with air.”
The grapes for Buitenverwachting Maximus were partially whole-bunch pressed, with the other part receiving a 12-hour skin maceration. Fermentation was initiated using five different yeast cultures at a controlled temperature of 12ºC - 16ºC. After 21 days, fermentation was complete, followed by 15 months of aging in French barriques.
