Imposing as ink, the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve 2020 showcases a deep plum-red hue enchanting in the glass. Its aromatic profile reveals a complex interplay of ripe red berries and cherries, delicately accented by floral notes of violets and hints of dark chocolate. On the palate, a luscious embrace of dark fruit nuances unfolds, featuring ripe plums, mulberries, and black currants, perfectly harmonized with rounded notes of smooth dark chocolate and firm tannins. This exquisite wine is crafted from vines over 30 years old, rooted in quintessential Karoo clay and sandy soils. Handpicked in mid to late February, the selected Touriga Nacional (71%) and Tinta Roriz (29%) grapes are sourced from specific vineyard parcels.
The selected grapes for the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve were meticulously handpicked and upon arrival at the winery de-stemmed, crushed, and quickly cooled in open fermenters. The grapes underwent spontaneous fermentation using only wild yeast cultures native to the area. Once the desired sugar level was achieved, the fermentation process was halted by adding alcohol to the must. The wine then matured for 12 months in large barrels.
