De Trafford Petit Verdot 2014 is a bold expression of the varietal, showcasing a deep ruby hue that hints at its rich structure. Aromas of mint, pepper, tobacco, and a dash of cinnamon intertwine with luscious blackberry fruit, creating a bouquet that captivates the senses. The freshness is marked by bright acidity and finely-grained tannins, imparting an invigorating character that begins to smoothen beautifully upon release. Sourced from a low-yield vineyard on the Helderberg slopes, where only six tons per hectare are produced, this wine's concentrated complexity and depth are truly remarkable.
The grapes were hand-harvested, destemmed, and crushed into small open fermentation tanks. Spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts was conducted at 28 °C, with the cap being hand-punched down twice daily for ten days. The wine was drawn directly into barrels, along with the press juice from traditional basket pressing. All wines underwent malolactic fermentation in barrel. Aging utilized 25% new 225-liter French oak barrels from renowned coopers for 20 months. The wine was bottled unfiltered and by hand at the estate.
