The Grangehurst Nikela is a sumptuous Cape Blend, distinguished by its prominent Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage components. In the glass, it showcases a deep ruby hue, unleashing an enticing and complex bouquet of red fruits, mint, cedar, and mocha. On the palate, velvety, ripe tannins caress the senses, offering an elegant structure and an exceptionally lengthy finish.
The name 'Nikela' (pronounced ni-ghe-la) is derived from Xhosa and Zulu, meaning 'homage', a tribute to the winemaker Jeremy Walker's late parents.
Bei Ankunft in der Kellerei wurde das Traubengut zunächst komplett entrappt, gequetscht und anschließend je nach Rebsorte zwischen fünf und 14 Tage lang auf der Haut vergoren. Während der Gärzeit wurde der Tresterhut vier- bis sechsmal täglich untergetaucht, um ein Maximum an Farbe, Tannin und Geschmack zu extrahieren. Nach Abschluss der alkoholischen Gärung wurde der freiablaufende Wein von der Haut abgelassen, die Schalen sanft in der traditionellen Korbpresse abgepresst und in kleine Eichenfässer geleitet. Die malalaktische Gärung fand teils in Stahl sowie teils im Fass statt. Nach Abschluss der malolaktischen Gärung reiften alle Komponenten 33 Monate lang in 225 l - Eichenfässern (97 % französische und 3 % amerikanische Eiche), und wurden anschließend verschnitten und auf die Flasche gefüllt.
