Herdade do Esporão

Vineyard Herdade do Esporão

The origins of the Herdade do Esporao, in the Alentejo and its tradition and wine-making heritage date back to the Bronze Age. There is also evidence that the Romans valued this fertile land in what is now Reguengos de Monsaraz for growing wine. In the year 1267, the borders were marked out and since then, they have not been changed in any significant way. Terroir comes from the French and stands for the complexity of conditions that influence the quality of a wine, such as the climate, the soil and location, to name but a few. These factors are also largely responsible for the high quality of Esporão's wines. With summer temperatures of over 40°C during the day and cooler nights, the conditions are ideal for the grapes to ripen. The barren soils of predominantly slate and volcanic rock give the wines a fine minerality and the cool Atlantic breeze gives them the necessary breed. All these factors together with the skill, experience and knowledge of the oenologists David Baverstock, Luís Patrão and Sandra Alves (responsible for the white wines), make the wines what they are. A piece of Portugal. It is believed that the Torre do Esporão, the tower on the winery, was already built in the Middle Ages. Evidence suggests that the architect Morgado Álvaro Mendes planned this structure and had it built between 1457 and 1490. Of course, the Torre do Esporão has not remained untouched over the centuries, so in 2003 it was completely renovated to restore it to its former glory. In the interior of the tower there is a small archeological museum in the ground floor with numerous exhibits that were found during the excavations of the estate. Furthermore, in the upper floors there is an exhibition of numerous artists with the original works that were used to decorate the annually changing labels of the Esporão wines.
