Derived from the unique terroir of the Kloof vineyard in Elgin, the Iona Kloof Chardonnay 2024 presents a chalky yet linear profile enhanced by its invigorating acidity. The palate is enveloped by soft notes of pear and lime, intertwined with intriguing hints of salinity and oyster shell minerality. This wine offers an unforgettable experience with remarkable aging potential. A judicious use of oak contributes to a precise, complex, and multifaceted character, cultivated 420 meters above sea level, overlooking the stunning Elgin Valley and the Atlantic. Andrew Gunn founded Iona in one of the coolest vineyard regions of the Cape, yielding wines of exceptional purity and character.
Handpicked grapes were cooled overnight before whole berry pressing. No fining agents were used, ensuring a juice rich in solids. This wine underwent 100% wild fermentation in selected French oak barrels of 300 liters (20% new, the rest in second, third, and fourth fill). It spent 12 months on the lees, with 20% malolactic fermentation and no battonage. The wine was then racked, blended, and naturally clarified and stabilized for three months prior to bottling.
