The Ladybird Claypot Merlot captivates with its radiant ruby color, unfolding an enchanting bouquet of black cherries, plums, vanilla pod, milk chocolate, and oak spice. This alluring aromatic profile is beautifully balanced by vibrant acidity and elegantly integrated tannins. Winemaker Francois van Zyl, having honed his craft in Pomerol, lends expertise to this exceptional Merlot that flourishes in the north-facing slopes of the Ladybird vineyards, revealing the varietal's true potential.
The grapes were handpicked in the early morning hours. Depending on the season, they were pre-cooled in small stainless steel tanks, destemmed, and manually sorted. A portion of the grapes underwent rapid, warm, natural fermentation in small open fermenters, while the other portion was placed in closed tanks for extended maceration—sometimes lasting up to 30 days post-harvest. This process enhances the wine's structure and softens the tannins. Malolactic fermentation occurred in stainless steel tanks, and the finished wine spent an additional 3 months on the lees before pressing. Finally, the wine matured in 100% new barriques from Francois Freres and Seguin Moreau for 16 to 27 months without fining before bottling.
