The Radford Dale Frankenstein Pinotage 2023 defies the expectations associated with its name. This wine, crafted from 30-year-old vines, offers a silky texture and excellent balance, embodying sophistication. Originating from the mind of Dr. Abraham Perold, who created the Pinotage grape by crossing Pinot Noir and Cinsault in 1925, this wine is a tribute to the innovative spirit he embodied. Similar to Mary Shelley's Victor Frankenstein, who engineered a remarkable creature from mismatched parts, this Pinotage celebrates the art of winemaking.
The grapes were handpicked and transported in small 20 kg baskets to the winery, where they were cooled overnight. The following morning, a meticulous selection was made: 50% of the fruit was destemmed and placed whole into wooden fermenters, while the remainder was crushed and fermented. After fermentation, the wine was pressed in a traditional basket press and matured in French barrels to complete its aging process.
