As landscape architects by profession, the Bokdals first began their search for the perfect piece of land in Europe, but finally saw their 15-year-old dream take shape in South Africa, when they fell in love with the beauty of the Western Cape and found the perfect growing area on their current farm "Andreas Wines" in Wellington.
With a history that goes back to the time of the first Huguenot settlement in the valley, the farm's growing area is part of the land that was assigned to Barned Blum in 1699.
The Andreas Winery owns just 4.5 hectares of land under Shiraz vines - the perfect grape variety for this growing area. Long, hot summer days, cooled by cool afternoon breezes, and cold, wet winters combined with sandy and clayey soils, provide the perfect terroir for this noble grape variety, which produces small, dark and intensely aromatic berries - a characteristic of Shiraz.
Due to its small size, the winery produces only 13,500 litres of Shiraz per year, most of which is intended for domestic consumption. This limited production volume ensures strict and active quality control at every step of the production process - from the vineyard to the winery, and even the bottling of the wine takes place on the estate. Biodynamic principles are the basis for ecologically sensitive viticulture methods. This includes above all the renunciation of pesticides and the encouragement and support of natural enemies in pest control. The highly endowed Andreas Shiraz is famous for its first-class quality, elegance and highly exciting aromas and notes that blend into a perfect structure. The Andreas Shiraz is a regular receiver of prizes and awards, even its first vintage has already been awarded silver at the Veritas Awards and double gold at the International Michelangelo Wine Awards. A top class wine!
