Discovering Rooibos Tea in Cederberg

The Rise of Rooibos Tea

Rooibos tea was officially recognized in 2021 by the European Union with a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). This label signifies a product with a specific geographical origin and a production process defined by that region. The Rooibos plant is exclusively grown in the Cederberg mountains of the Western Cape.

Other famous PDO products include Champagne from France and Feta cheese from Greece.

Currently, Rooibos is the only PDO product from South Africa.

Cederberg, the Home of Rooibos Tea

This protection status not only aids Cederberg farmers in selling more tea in European markets but also draws tourists keen to explore this unique region. Visitors desire firsthand experiences of Rooibos cultivation and a deeper understanding of the culture and history behind this beloved product. The Cederberg region has undoubtedly felt a surge in interest.

“The registration of Rooibos as PDO heightened awareness among major tea-drinking nations in Europe about its unique origins in the Cederberg,” states Adele du Toit from the SA Rooibos Council (SARC).

“Most of these tea plantations are over 100 years old. Visiting this region and discovering its history and tea culture is a unique experience. A tea tour opens up a whole new world.”

Sanet and Marietjie, the founders of the Rooibos Route in Clanwilliam, confirm an increase in tourist numbers. “We host tourists from all over, with a recent influx from Germany and Switzerland. Clanwilliam has also become popular among South Africans looking for remote locations,” says Sanet Steher.

The Rooibos Route offers a comprehensive exploration of Rooibos tea, from farm to cup, highlighting local farms, trails, restaurants, and accommodations.

The Cederberg region truly deserves the attention from travelers drawn to South Africa's most famous hot beverage.
