Sweet and dessert wines - South Africa's great variety
South African fortified wines are generally included among sweet wines, like Sherries. What connects them all is the addition of either distilled, high-proof alcohol from brandy production or the addition of neutral wine distillate from wine production. The addition of sugar is prohibited in the production of Cape sweet wines. There is a wide variety of fortified wine variants and styles - which can be found in red and white versions under different South African Cape fortified classifications, but they adhere to Portuguese standards. There are dry Cape dessert wines that are often enjoyed as an aperitif, as well as sweeter variants that can be recommended for dessert and as an aperitif. Both should always be enjoyed slightly chilled. White Cape fortified wines are usually made from Chenin Blanc.
