Portugiesische Berglandschaft mit saftig grünen Weinbergen in Terrassen angelegt mit Blick auf den Fluß Douro

Let yourself be surprised by the freshness and finesse of Portuguese rosés. Are you looking for a light, carefree accompaniment to summer cuisine? A wine that goes well with all kinds of starters, fish, and white meats? A suitable drink as a Prosecco alternative for your next party? Then a Vinho rosado, a Portuguese rosé wine, is just right for you! It comes in many variations and, thanks to its delicate fruity notes and a hint of sweetness, it is not only suitable for many occasions, but also very drinkable.

Berry fruit aromas and a balanced acidity-sweetness ratio

Berry fruit aromas and a balanced acidity-sweetness ratio are the typical characteristics of a rosé wine from Portugal. Whether salmon-colored with dark berry and raspberry tones or almost pink with a hint of strawberry and red currant notes, freshness and fruitiness are the hallmarks of Portuguese rosé wines. Some also have fresh citrus notes, aromas similar to red wine, or floral notes as a delicate finish. Just try it and find the one that most appeals to your palate!

Very fresh and drinkable rosé wines

The Vinho Verde region in northwestern Portugal is the birthplace of many rosé wines. Especially from Minho down and across the Douro to Basto, there are many wineries dedicated to Vinho rosado. Grape varieties such as Espadeiro Tinto, Azal Tinto, Borracal, Vinhao, and Padeiro thrive here, forming the basis for very fresh and palatable rosé wines.

High-quality rosé wines also come from the Terras da Beira region and the picturesque vineyards of the Algarve. Aragonez and Shiraz/Syrah grapes give the rosé from the Lisbon region its typical aroma, which goes wonderfully with grilled meat, fish, or pasta. The Vinho rosados from the Alentejano wine region, where the Aragonez and Touriga Franca grape varieties grow, are mineral, fresh, and fruity. A cheeky, dry rosé with floral strawberry notes comes from the Alentejo. Aragonez, Shiraz/Syrah, and Touriga Nacional grapes provide floral notes and juicy nuances of red fruits. A rosé perfect for all sunny days

The Mateus Rosé brand wine

Have you heard of Mateus Rosé? No? Then it's time you got to know this Portuguese rosé wine! Mateus Rosé is a very special wine and not least because it is the favorite wine of Queen Elizabeth II of England. American rock star Jimi Hendrix also enjoyed a glass of Portugal's most famous vinho rosado. Now you might think you have to be as rich as a queen or a famous musician to enjoy Portuguese rosé wine. But no! It is affordable for every budget.

Rosé wine – sweet and lightly sparkling

Rosé wine – sweet and lightly sparkling Mateus Rosé is popular worldwide as a semi-dry to sweet and lightly sparkling rosé wine. Around 50 million bottles of this young, sparkling, and fruity wine are sold in 125 countries around the world every year. Perhaps you have already enjoyed Portuguese Vinho rosado with good friends and simply didn't know how famous it is.

It's not just the bottle that's special

Vinho Verde winemaker Fernando Van Zeller Guedes from Vila Real in the Douro Valley is essentially its inventor. In 1942, he had a dream of creating a wine that would be the exact opposite of port: light, fresh, and sparkling. His target audience was younger wine drinkers and women in particular. The fact that his dream became reality is also thanks to his winemaker friends, who were enthusiastic about his idea

A castle as its namesake

Mateus Rosé has remained unchanged since its early days. Then as now, it is impossible to overlook on the wine shelf. You can hardly miss it there, thanks to its characteristic bulbous bottle, which is said to be inspired by the shape of canteens used in World War I. Mateus Castle, the namesake for this special Portuguese rosé, is still immortalized on the labels of the bottles today.

Branded wine from local grape varieties

The production site is also still the same as it was back then: Mateus Rosé is still produced in Vila Real. However, the main growing area is now in Anadia in the Bairrada wine region south of the Douro Valley. The famous branded wine is based on local grape varieties such as Baga, Bastardo, and Tinta Pinheira. Mateus Rosé is wonderful as an aperitif wine! Enjoy it as an accompaniment to fish and poultry. Look forward to your next glass of rosé!
