Growing Region Paarl - South Africa

The Paarl wine region is about 50 km northeast of Cape Town.

The town of Paarl itself lies at the foot of a large granite formation with three rounded dome-shaped rocks. The largest of these is Paarl Rock (Paarl means "pearl," and the rock is so named because it glows impressively in the evening glow). Summers in the region are long and warm. Rainfall is usually sufficient, so that additional irrigation is necessary only in exceptional cases. A wide variety of grape varieties are planted in this area. However, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc have the best potential.

More Information

The Paarl district also includes the Franschhoek area, the ‘culinary capital’ of the Cape. It has retained its character from the days of the French Huguenots, as has Wellington, which is an increasingly interesting quality wine region. Almost all grape growers can be found here.

The newest districts are Simonsberg-Paarl, located in the best area at the foot of Simonsberg, and Voor-Paardeberg. Anura, Nederburg, Noble Hill, Glen Carlou, Fairview, Seidelberg, Rudera and Windmeul are just a few of the world-renowned wineries whose wines you will find in our Paarl range.

The Paarl district is located in the Coastal Region and is further divided into the sub-regions of Simonsberg-Paarl and Voor Paardeberg. All these regions are assigned to the geographical super-region of Western Cape.
