Founded in 2015, the boutique winery Thistle and Weed inSouth Africa's famous Stellenbosch wine region is owned by oenologist Stephanie Wiid and winemaker Etienne Terblanche, who have demonstrated their passionate talent and remarkable skill with their highly acclaimed portfolio of award-winning wines not only in the Cape wine scene, but also internationally.
The passionate team is committed to exploring the Cape's best vineyards to produce honest and authentic wines with a deep connection to nature that fully express the true and unmistakable expression of the terroir.
Etienne and Stephanie took inspiration for the name of their own winery ("Thistle and Weed") from the wildly spreading weeds and stubborn thistles in the Cape vineyards. A name that expresses the uncompromising tenacity and remarkable survivability of the vines.
Winemaker Etienne Terblanche grew up in a sleepy village on the west coast, where he worked at weekends in his parents' seaside restaurant. He holds a Master's degree in Viticulture and Oenology from Montpellier SupAgro and a PhD in Viticulture from the University of Stellenbosch. From 2012, he sharpened his secateurs as a winemaker at Delheim Wines in Stellenbosch, before also joining Vinpro as a consultant at the end of 2018.
Winemaker Stephanie Wiid grew up in the bustling city of Johannesburg. Her move to Stellenbosch to study viticulture and oenology may seem unusual for a city dweller, but Stephanie already had wine in her blood. Her grandfather was the famous Niel Joubert of Spier Winery - pioneer and founding member of the Stellenbosch Wine Route. Stephanie completed her master's degree in viticulture at the University of Stellenbosch, then spent 10 years as a winemaker at the innovative Fairview Winery and has been fully dedicated to her own winery "Thistle and Weed" since the end of 2018.
The Thistle and Weed winery is regularly recognised with prestigious prizes and awards that testify to the first-class quality and unmistakable character of its terroir-driven wines.
