Vineyard Clos Malverne
The Clos Malverne winery is situated in the picturesque Devon Valley outside Stellenbosch in a location that is extremely favorable for wine growing. Owner Seymour Pritchard, who purchased the 27 ha wine farm in 1969, only produce his first wine, a Cabernet Sauvignon, in the mid-1980s and released his first wine to the public in 1988 with his 1988 Cabernet Sauvignon. Only ten years after the first tentative attempt, Clos Malverne was the first winery to release a Cape Blend, the Clos Malverne Auret 1998. This Cape Blend is still the first and only Cape Blend that has been awarded an incredible 5 stars by the John Platter Wine Guide.
Today the talented winemaker Suzanne Coetzee produces Clos Malvernes award-winning portfolio, which includes the Clos Malverne Pinotage Reserve, the Clos Malverne Spirit of Malverne, the Clos Malverne Sauvignon Blanc and the Ellie MCC, an unusually pink sparkling wine from the Shiraz grape. The Devon Valley has a microclimate which is the key to the first-class quality of the Clos Malverne grapes. Although the valley is fairly flat, it serves as a natural catchment basin for the early morning mists of the Stellenbosch region. The valley is also cooler than the surrounding areas, which considerably prolongs the ripening period of the grapes and thus ensures optimal ripening.
Clos Malverne follows a careful style of hand-made wine production with minimal intervention in the natural vinification process. As one of only a few wineries, Clos Malverne remains true to the traditional art of winemaking and uses the old basket press, one of the oldest methods of pressing grapes. The result is a smooth, soft wine of exceptional elegance and complexity, which wonderfully expresses its terroir.
