Wine with asparagus

Frische weiße Spargelstangen in einer Papiertüte liegen auf einem Holztisch

The asparagus season is an annual culinary highlight that unfolds with spring. The tender spears grow out of the ground, their heads reaching towards the sun, heralding the start of the season. From April to June, especially in the spring months, asparagus reaches its peak quality and becomes the star of our plates.

The art of preparing asparagus lies not only in cooking it properly, but also in choosing the right accompaniment to complete the flavour experience. This is where South African and Portuguese white wines come into play, which go particularly well with asparagus dishes thanks to their harmonious character and fruity finesse. They should harmonise the slightly bitter note of the asparagus and emphasise the fine aromas.

More information

When enjoying wine with asparagus, it is important that the wine does not have too much acidity so as not to mask the delicate flavours of the vegetable. It should also not be too sweet. Many South African and Portuguese white wines, especially Chenin Blanc and Alvarinho or Chardonnay, fulfil these requirements and help to make the asparagus season a culinary highlight.

An outstanding representative is the South African Chenin Blanc, which combines perfectly with the mild flavour of asparagus thanks to its freshness and fine fruit. Chenin Blanc often shows flavours of citrus fruit, green apple and a hint of honey, which makes the culinary experience even more enriching.

Another excellent choice is the Portuguese Alvarinho. It is characterised by a balanced fruitiness that harmonises perfectly with asparagus. Notes of citrus fruits, exotic fruits and a subtle mineral flavour make this wine an exquisite accompaniment to asparagus dishes.

We recommend a fresh, mineral wine with the typical dish of asparagus with hollandaise, and if the asparagus is served grilled, we could even imagine a light red.

Cheers and bon appétit!
