Wine with pumpkin
Pumpkin is an integral part of autumn cuisine – sometimes sweet, sometimes nutty, sometimes hearty and spicy. Whether in soup, roasted vegetables, risotto or curry, the wine selection should complement the delicate sweetness and soft texture of the pumpkin without overpowering it. We recommend wines from Portugal and South Africa that are the perfect accompaniment to your pumpkin dishes.
South African wines – a balance of richness and freshness
Chenin Blanc: with its ripe fruit, light honey notes and fresh acidity, Chenin Blanc pairs beautifully with pumpkin risotto, baked pumpkin or pumpkin gnocchi in sage butter. The natural creaminess of the wine perfectly mirrors the texture of the dish.
Chardonnay: its structure goes particularly well with creamy pumpkin soup or pumpkin tart with goat's cheese. The subtle spice and freshness balance out the sweetness of the pumpkin.
Grenache or Cinsault: fruity, elegant red wines with low tannins that go well with oven-roasted pumpkin or hearty pumpkin dishes with bacon or mushrooms. Served slightly chilled, it is a great all-rounder for autumn.
Portuguese wines – Spice & elegance for autumn cuisine
Encruzado: Portugal's great white wine grape variety impresses with finesse, floral notes and mineral freshness. Ideal with pumpkin lasagne or roasted pumpkin with Mediterranean herbs – creating a harmonious contrast to the natural sweetness of the pumpkin.
Alvarinho: brings lively acidity and citrus freshness. Goes well with light pumpkin dishes, pumpkin salad or pumpkin soup with ginger. The wine adds a burst of freshness to the velvety consistency.
Castelão or Tinta Roriz: when things get a little heartier – such as oven-baked pumpkin with a spicy filling – a slightly stronger, but not too tannic red wine is called for. These Portuguese reds have enough substance without dominating the pumpkin.
