Vineyard Catherine Marshall Wines
The Catherine Marshall Wines Winery is situated in the Elgin wine region, along the Cape South Coast of South Africa. Under the direction of oenologist Catherine Marshall, it produces a highly acclaimed and award-winning portfolio of premium "Cool Climate" wines made from the Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Chenin Blanc grape varieties - wines which are characterised by their extraordinary intensity, purity and freshness.
Only one hour east of Cape Town, you will find the high and cool Elgin area, nestled in the old sandstone Hottentots Holland Mountains. While in the past apple growing was the traditional activity in the Elgin, today not only apples are produced, but also award-winning wines with unique fruit and elegance. Especially grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Shiraz thrive particularly well in this late maturing and cooler terroir. What began in 1996, as a fun "three barrel wine treading" with friends and family, was to result in an immensely tasty Syrah and was the springboard to the establishment of the Western Cape Wine Region's first micro-winery, with a focus on the Pinot Noir grape variety.
The aptly named "Barefoot Wine Company", which sells its products under the Catherine Marshall Wines label, has long since outgrown its once humble beginnings and has established itself as a legendary institution in the global wine market. Catherine graduated in oenology from the famous Elsenburg College in Stellenbosch, after which she gained valuable experience in local wineries as well as on vineyards in France (Burgundy and St-Emilion-Bordeaux), California and Australia. As a winery master at various wineries in Stellenbosch and Paarl, she gained both domestic and international awards, including 5 star ratings from Platter's South African Wine Guide.
