The sustainability of South African wines
South Africa's wine region is one of the leading wine nations in terms of sustainability. Since the harvest in 2000, approximately 95% of the grapes have been produced according to the guidelines of the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW). The IPW programme is now a modern, comprehensive management programme for wine producers that meets the global sustainability standards of the international wine organisations FIVS and OIV. The South African wine industry recognised the need for environmental protection early on and invested in research and development. At the same time, official control systems were optimised to provide customers with a trustworthy insight into the process from grapevine to bottle. With the introduction of the new quality seal Sustainable Wines of South Africa, South African winemakers guarantee certified sustainable wine production in harmony with nature.
Origin label for wines from South Africa
South Africa's wine production has been subject to strict wine controls mandated by the Department of Agriculture since 1973. The guarantee label Wines of Origin (W. O.) South Africa is awarded exclusively to original vintage labels and confirms the accuracy of origin, vintage and grape variety. From the 2010 vintage onwards, South Africa's wine producers can also demonstrate their sustainable commitment on the bottle. The existing W.O. label has been expanded to a larger variant and is awarded by the Wine of Spirit Board only when the IPW accreditation has been successfully verified. Compliance with measures for the protection of biodiversity is also taken into account. This officially guarantees sustainable management throughout the entire value chain. Buyers and consumers can get an overview by entering the label number on the Sustainable Wines South Africa website: www.swsa.co.za. Notably, South Africa's commitment to sustainability is voluntary. At the same time, the winemakers are convinced that only independent checks and transparency can make the credibility of Sustainable Wines of South Africa a reality.
