Battle of the Giants - Syrah vs Pinot Noir

South African Syrah vs Pinot Noir
The focus on these contrasting varieties brings to mind a quote from John Stimpfig: "For me, top-notch Syrah possesses the perfume and freshness of Pinot Noir without the tantrums in the vineyard." Many wine enthusiasts proudly call themselves Syrah aficionados. There’s nothing quite like a cool, elegant Syrah sourced from slowly ripening grapes grown in a cool climate. As the second-most planted red grape variety in South Africa, Shiraz can be found in various regions, displaying a range of styles from mature wines in warmer areas to finely crafted versions from cooler regions, such as the Cape South Coast. Shiraz’s easier cultivation and production compared to Pinot Noir may explain its occasional presence in less favorable wines.
Syrah in South Africa
Pinot Noir is akin to that challenging friend everyone tries to please. For Pinot Noir, each person puts their best foot forward to avoid calamity. Given Shiraz's greater tolerance, it’s expected to handle whatever comes its way. Life isn’t fair – not even for grape varieties! Shiraz is friendlier, more popular, and easily blends with other varieties, especially its Rhône companions. Who could resist the extended friend circle found in a Châteauneuf-du-Pape?!
Princess Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is less sociable and not keen on blending partners. She prefers Chardonnay and relishes her moments in Champagne – maybe with a hint of Pinot Meunier... When treated with utmost respect, whether from the vineyard to the winemaker, you'll find yourself enamored by Princess Pinot Noir. Price tags will matter little, and you’ll ensure you serve the juice at optimal 13 °C, retrieving your crystal Burgundy glasses from the top shelf to reveal her wonderful dimensions and complexity. Of course, not every Pinot Noir will win your heart, but that's just due to past injustices…
What makes Pinot Noir so temperamental?
It starts with its thin skin – and I don’t mean that metaphorically! Its delicate texture and tight clusters make it susceptible to heat damage and diseases, preferring cooler climates while avoiding frost and hail. While its charming demeanor may make it popular, that doesn't mean that Shiraz is a weakling. It’s a noble variety with immense structure and complexity. Picture how rewarding it could be if you give it the same attentive care you would Pinot Noir!
Shiraz boasts an uncanny ability – and seems willing – to adapt, making it easier to understand for winemakers and culinary pairings alike! In a battle of the giants, we would bet on Shiraz. It's more robust, adaptable, and has made many friends along the way. Nevertheless, Pinot Noir plays its own game. It may be more delicate and vulnerable, but it never forgets – nor will it allow you to forget – its noble status!
